Frequently Asked Questions

Where do salvage groceries come from?

The big store warehouses have accidents like a fork truck driver sticks a fork through a case of canned corn causing the whole skid to be put into salvage and sent to a reclamation center.  The damaged items are then seperated and sent to a distributor who resells the product to discount grocery stores.

Grocery items are generally pulled from the big store shelves because their 'dates' are getting close.  It may be that the item was seasonal like Halloween candy.  After Halloween this candy will not sell at the big stores but it is still candy and will sell at a discount at the salvage stores.

Even with all that, when these salvage groceries reach our store, they are checked for any damage that may have effected quality before they are placed on our shelves.

What does it mean when a product is "out of date"?

Perishables such as milk or eggs have expiration dates that should be respected, the "best use by" dates on non-perishable groceries are mostly measures for making sure grocers rotate their stock efficiently.    Look in your cuboard and you will probably find a bottle or can of something that is past its "best use by" date.  Studies have been done that prove most products to be just as good months after it's "best use by" date as it was a month before it's "best use by" date.   As long as the seal is intact or the vacuum is good, the product is still fine.  You can find more information about Food Product Dating HERE.

What if I find something I really like.   Can you get more?

The bulk of what we buy are packed in banana boxes on pallets.  We never know what's inside the banana boxes.   So you should stock up on the things you really like.  We could not promise you that we would ever stock it again.
